At Performance Horse Vets, our focus is the objective measurement of performance and pathology, allowing for meaningful decisions to be made pertaining to the management and treatment of horses.
We manage the optimisation and maintenance of the performance of equine athletes whilst ensuring the
safety and welfare of the individual horse in a
science-led private clinic.
Lameness Investigation, Diagnostics,
Tracking & Data Collection
Using the Equinosis Q with Lameness Locator® software, Dr Mike Davies can quantify equine lameness with wireless sensors that track horse movement accurately to less than 1 millimeter. Algorithms, based on decades of equine research, compute precise lameness metrics the human eye can’t see. This data can be confidentially stored and used to assess the mobility and performance of your horse throughout competition seasons or development to provide science led, objective measurements.
Poor Performance Investigations + Diagnostics
When your horse's performance starts to decline, PHV leave no stone unturned in their investigation. With leading industry experience, Dr Mike Davies and the team can explore a range of modalities and diagnoses to get your horse back on track.
It takes a congruent team to optimise your horse's potential. We can meet with other industry professionals engaged in your horse's well-being and care, providing veterinary advice, imaging and data to assist in the provision of their services.
The PHV team have an abundance of experience that will be of great benefit to your breeding endeavours. Our reproduction services include AI (frozen + chilled), evaluation and treatment of sub-fertile mares, routine pregnancy scans and neonatal management.
We offer: in-house and external laboratory services, radiography, upper airway endoscopy, Pre-Purchasae Exams, poor performance investigations, lameness diagnostics and data tracking, Lameness Locator maintenance and re-assessment, dynamic scoping, reproduction services, BAL, and equine medicine consultations.

Mike Davies BSc(Hons) BVM&S Cert.Equine Surgery(Orthopaedics)
Mike graduated from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland with both a Veterinary degree and a degree in Veterinary Pathological Science. Following this he jumped continents to complete an internship in Large Animal Medicine and Surgery at University of Guelph, Canada.
He then made his was back to the UK to work in equine general practice with elite sport horses for seven years, and passed the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons examination in Equine Surgery and Orthopaedics.
Ever a wanderer at heart, Mike came to Australia and opened The Horse Hospital in Ascot, which he owned and operated from 2002 – 2013. He also established The Horse Hospital and Rehabilitation Centre in Queensland during this time. In 2013 his need to roam returned, and he sold both businesses before travelling back to the UK.
Here he became a seasonal consultant reproduction veterinarian to two large commercial Thoroughbred studs, caring for up to 500 mares each year. This gave Mike robust experience in the management of neonatal foals, particularly addressing limb deformities, as well as amassing a wealth of equine reproduction experience.
Curious and innovative, Mike invented the equine sports science platforms ClockIt RACE and SPORT, which enables remote monitoring of exercising horses and subsequent identification of fitness trends and abnormalities. As part of this project he has oversight of data on more than 100,000 racehorse exercise sessions which brings unique insight into the assessment of racehorse and performance horse function.
Mike’s passion is the development of objective measurement of performance and pathology, allowing for meaningful decisions to be made pertaining to the management and treatment of horses. He focuses on the optimisation and maintenance of the performance of equine athletes whilst ensuring the safety and welfare of the individual horse.
